Yale University and a student group announced Friday that they’ve reached a settlement in a federal lawsuit that accused the Ivy League school of discriminating against students with mental health disabilities, including pressuring them to withdraw.Under the agreement, Yale will modify its policies regarding medical leaves of absence, including streamlining the reinstatement process for students who return to campus. The student group, which also represents alumni, had argued the process was onerous, discouraging students for decades from taking medical leave when they needed it most. The settlement is a “watershed moment” for the university and mental health patients, said 2019 graduate Rishi Mirchandani, a co-founder of Elis for Rachael, the group that sued. It was formed to help students with mental health issues in honor of a Yale student who took her own life. “This historic settlement affirms that students with mental health needs truly belong,” Mirchandani said.A ...

Why Hawaii loves Spam, and Spam loves Hawaii

It’s one of those undeniable pairings we’ve come to enjoy. That was especially apparent last week, when Hormel, the maker of Spam, sent five truckloads of Spam products — over 264,000 cans worth — and its non-profit arm, Convoy of Hope, to support recovery efforts after the devastating fires that charred Maui. Hormel is also selling a shirt, which reads “Spam Loves Maui,” online, with 100% of proceeds going to the Aloha United Way’s Maui Fire Relief Fund. The bond between Spam and Hawaii "spans decades," Hormel said in a recent press release. It all started during another challenging time: the 1930s.  SPAM gives back to the people of Maui in their time of need Hormel Foods introduced the blue-canned luncheon meat in 1937. Within four years, more than 100 million pounds of Spam — which is pork with ham, salt, water, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrite — was being sent to feed Allied troops during World War II...
