Newsom proposal would add billions for mental health treatment beds

In a major legislative proposal to combat the state’s growing homelessness crisis, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Sunday an effort to push billions of dollars toward building a vast network of treatment beds to help California’s mentally ill and drug-addicted residents find care.Through a bond measure that could reach up to $5 billion, the governor hopes to build at minimum 6,000 new mental health beds across the state. Funding would also come through the diversion of over $1 billion annually from a pool of money created by a proposition passed by voters almost two decades ago.“It is unacceptable what we’re dealing with at scale in California,” Newsom said at a press conference on Sunday in San Diego announcing the new effort. “We have to address and come to grips with the reality of mental health in our state and nation.”Both the bond measure and diversion of funds would have to pass the muster of the legislature before being placed on the ballot an...

BERLIN (AP) — Amine Adli was twice booked for diving, twice excused, and Bayer Leverkusen scored twice from the resulting penalties to upset Bayern Munich 2-1.Bayern’s third defeat of the season left Borussia Dortmund top of the Bundesliga on Sunday.Referee Tobias Stieler had VAR to thank — twice — after getting it wrong initially both times. He apologized to Adli on each occasion after consulting replays which showed the French player had, in fact, been fouled first by Benjamin Pavard, then Dayot Upamecano. “It was the perfect example today of great collaboration with the video assistant,” Stieler said. “He gets a lot of complaints and is always very harshly criticized. Today it was a lifesaver for the game.”Exequiel Palacios scored both penalties to end Bayern’s four-game winning run across all competitions and leave Dortmund one point clear with nine rounds remaining.“It was a very important game for us. We knew that before the game but were unable to show it on...

El Clásico: FC Barcelona prevalece 2-1 frente al Real Madrid en un partido de infarto

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:48:25 GMT

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Catilin Clark admits she didn’t have her best game, but it was enough to get Iowa to the Sweet 16.The unanimous AP All-American had 22 points and 12 assists to help the Hawkeyes defeat Georgia 74-66 in a second-round women’s NCAA Tournament game Sunday.Clark was held scoreless for 13 minutes in the first half, but scored 14 second-half points as the Hawkeyes (28-6), the No. 2 seed in Seattle Regional 4, finally shook off the 10th-seeded Lady Bulldogs (22-12). She made just 6 of 17 shots, but either scored or assisted on 30 of Iowa’s 33 second-half points.“I think any time you’re one of the 16 teams who get to keep playing basketball, it’s pretty special,” Clark said. “But it wasn’t a huge party or celebration in the locker room. This wasn’t our goal. It’s one of the steps for reaching our goal, but it’s not the end-all, be-all for us.”Clark knew she could have hit more shots, but was happy with the win.“I probably could have made a couple of ...

MIAMI (AP) — Jose Vilela fled Cuba for the United States when he was 14 years old after spending six months in a concentration camp. Like many of his compatriots, he settled in Miami’s Cuban neighborhood, Little Havana.Vilela, now 68, paced Sunday afternoon outside loanDepot Park, the Miami Marlins’ home stadium, where the Cuban national baseball team was set to face the United States for a spot in the World Baseball Classic hours later. For prideful expats eager to separate sports from politics, the country’s first ever baseball game in Miami was cause for celebration. But for Vilela and hundreds of others, it was reason to protest the political oppression they escaped. Vilela stalked the stadium Sunday, yelling outside for anyone associated with the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who embraced Soviet-style communism, to leave the community. That included many Cuban players who are technically government employees.“We don’t want them here,” Vilela said. “...
