Commission clears acquisition of Weltec by DWS and MunichRe

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:39:10 GMT

The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the acquisition of joint control of Weltec Holding GmbH (‘Weltec') of Germany by DWS Alternatives Global Limited (‘DWS') of the UK and Münchener Rückversicherungs-Gesellschaft Aktiengesellschaft in München (‘MunichRe') of Germany. The transaction relates primarily to the operation of biogas and biomethane plants and the trading of its outputs, including electricity, heat and fertiliser in Germany. The Commission concluded that the notified transaction would not raise competition concerns, given the limited impact in the European Economic Area and the companies' limited combined market position resulting from the proposed transaction. The notified transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.More information is available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number M.11265.

Russell: Careers over kids? A lot of adults look at parenthood the wrong way

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:39:10 GMT

Motherhood, as almost any mother will tell you, is one of the hardest things women do. Especially because she’s rarely doing just that. Most women are juggling it all: Careers, intimate relationships, friendships, health, home, and then, of course, the kids. This could be part of the reason why a new Pew Research report, “Public Has Mixed Views on the Modern American Family,” showed that men and women are choosing their careers over having children. But it’s not the whole picture, and it’s too bad for society and for potential parents. Only about 26% think having kids is an essential part of fulfillment and just 23% think being married remains part of a key component of happiness. Americans now think high job satisfaction and close friendships are more fulfilling than being married or being a mom or dad. In fact, over 70% of people said having a career will help them achieve life fulfillment. This is unfortunate. There’s two things at play here, although both may...

On a Monday, an environmental advocacy group sent out a press notice that read “Save the whales. Tomorrow may be too late.” The notice was marked, “For release Tuesday.”Today’s West led the ten of spades against 3NT, and South won in dummy and let the ten of clubs ride. He hoped for five clubs, two spades, two hearts and at least one diamond. But when West took the king and led another spade, South had only eight tricks, and when East got in with the ace of diamonds, the defense ran the spades for down one.ACE APPEARSSouth mistimed. At Trick Two, dummy should lead a low diamond. When East’s ace appears, South can win four diamonds, two spades, two hearts and one club.Suppose East played a low diamond. If South’s king held, he could switch to clubs. If instead South’s king lost to West, South could win the spade return and take the queen of diamonds; if the jack fell, he would be home. If both defenders played low diamonds, South could ...

Time for fans of stumbling NFL teams to start dreaming about Caleb Williams coming to the rescue

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:39:10 GMT

DENVER (AP) — The Patriots are barely better than the Panthers. The Bears are bad again. So are the Broncos, who have surrendered a half dozen premium draft picks for a coach-quarterback combo that’s just not working out.The Cardinals stink, as expected. So do the Giants, surprisingly. The Titans, Vikings, Packers and Chargers are also off to slow starts, although Green Bay and L.A. have played us five games because of early byes. Each of them can take heart on their poor start because Caleb Williams could be coming to the rescue.Notwithstanding Xavier Watts’ dominance of the defending Heisman Trophy winner in Notre Dame’s rout of USC over the weekend, we now have a big enough sample size to peg the franchises with the best chance to “ Crash for Caleb.”Heading into Week 7, there’s one winless team (Carolina, which traded it’s first-round pick next year to Chicago), five teams that have won only once — including the aforementioned Bears — and four teams that have won...

Old but more than old school, Dusty Baker and Bruce Bochy shining as MLB’s oldest managers

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:39:10 GMT

HOUSTON (AP) — When Texas rookie Evan Carter was born in 2002, Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker had been managing in the big leagues for a decade and Rangers skipper Bruce Bochy was in his eighth season. The ages of MLB managers have been declining in the last few years, with 22 under 60 at the start of the 2023 season. But in the AL Championship Series, the two oldest managers in the majors, 74-year-old Baker and 68-year-old Bochy, are leading the way.“I can brag, because I’ve made it this far in age,” Baker said. “(And) it has something to do with us, but mostly to do with your team. And the fact that the team trusts us.”“I didn’t look at it as a competition as far as old versus young, to be honest,” said Bochy, whose team leads 2-0 heading into Game 3 on Wednesday. After Baker was fired by the Nationals following a 97-win season in 2017, he wondered if he’d ever get another shot. He thought his age — and salary demands commensurate with his experience — was keeping teams a...
