After additions, what are the expectations for the 2023 Bears?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:38:00 GMT

CHICAGO — A new year & several new additions bring more expectations for the Bears in 2023, but how much is realistic to expect from this group? There are more pieces in place than there were a year ago when general manager Ryan Poles shed payroll in his start to reconstructing the team. A No. 1 overall pick netted a top wide receiver along with future draft capital while a few positions were bolstered by the addition of veterans. Certainly quarterback Justin Fields has better protection and a deep threat with D.J. Moore while the defense solidified what could be a linebacker group to build on. Yet this is a team coming off of a 3-14 season and still is looking to fill holes along with adding depth to the current roster. Players are still trying to perfect a new defensive system brought by head coach Matt Eberflus and defensive coordinator Alan Williams while the offense continues to grow under second year coordinator Luke Getsy. Both are factors in weighing what's realistic to ex...

'Death Star' bill signed by Gov. Abbott, here are some of the impacts in Austin

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:38:00 GMT

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A bill dubbed the 'death star' bill by opponents -- which was signed by Gov. Greg Abbott last week -- will nix some local rules like mandatory water breaks for construction workers, eviction moratoriums and protections against predatory lending. HB 2127 will not allow local governments to have laws more strict than the state's in several areas including labor and environment. Democratic lawmakers fought the bill, saying it targets progressive ordinances passed by city lawmakers. Those behind the bill say it's a solution to a years-long push from the business community to make it easier to comply with rules and regulations across the state. Austin-aimed bills in the legislative session: What’s headed to the governor, what’s not "It was really disappointing to see that the governor signed that bill. I think that for cities throughout the state, it's gonna tie their hands in setting policies that are meant to protect the citizens of their areas," Rep. Vikki Goodwin,...

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:38:00 GMT

Gabe Kalscheur finished his ninth pre-draft workout Monday at home in the Twin Cities. His time with the Timberwolves marked his last scheduled workout of the grueling pre-draft process.Amazingly, through it all, the thing Kalscheur seemed to lament the most about his hectic schedule is the lack of … more gym time.“I love staying in the gym and staying sharp on my craft,” the Edina native and DeLaSalle alum said. “Obviously, we’re getting in work here, but you’re working out for maybe an hour and a half, and then it’s off-court stuff and then you’re back at the hotel. So, that part is kind of hard, kind of different for me. But you just adapt to it. It’s the NBA, it’s pro life, and you’ve got to adapt.”Kalscheur — who spent his first three seasons with the Gophers before transferring to Iowa State for his final two years of college — is a worker. Above his shooting prowess and defensive chops, that’s what defines him. That willingness to work has keyed the 6-foot-4 wing’s successes ...

ST. LOUIS – Following the chaos of this past weekend’s shooting in downtown St. Louis that saw one teenager dead and 10 others injured, Mayor Tishaura Jones pointed an accusatory finger at parents and others responsible for caring for kids. But one of those helping troubled youngsters says the problem goes much deeper than that.“Downtown is not a 1 a.m. destination for your 15-year-old. It’s a rule I make very clear in my own household, and it’s not a place to drop your children off unsupervised,” Jones said.Dr. Kendra Homes, president and CEO of Affinia Health, says there’s also another side to the story that’s even more concerning. Parental guidance is part of the problem.“Many of these children don’t have parents, they don’t have structure, they don’t have individuals to tell them that is not the right thing to do,” she said. “Also, what we need to do is we need to prevent. We need to provide resources and support and mental health services to prevent those kids from going down t...
